ভাসানী সমাজতন্ত্রী ছিলেন, কিন্তু শেষ দিকে তিনি ইসলামী সমাজতন্ত্রের কথা বলছিলেন। এ নিয়ে বিস্ময় ও হতাশা দু’টোই দেখা দিয়েছে, বিশেষ করে তাঁর অনুরাগী ও অনুসারীদের ভেতরে। বদরুদ্দীন উমর মনে করেন যে, এটা ছিল তার রাজনৈতিক জীবনের একটি মস্ত বড় পশ্চাদ্গমন। ১৯৭০ সালের জানুয়ারিতে তিনি লিখেছেন,  Whether the Maulana and his political associates understand the import of such declarations or not is a different  question, but the fact of the matter is that by his latest stand the Maulana has struck at the very root of democratic politics in this country.
